Harrison County, W.Va - The Drug Enforcement Agency announced Thursday that marijuana will remain a Schedule I drug, grouped with drugs like heroin and LSD.
The Food and Drug Administration declared marijuana serves "no currently accepted medical use," as well as having "a high potential for abuse."
At least 25 states and Washington, D.C. have approved the use of medical marijuana. Advocates here say the DEA's latest decision was deflating, but not surprising.
"It's just disappointing that a law enforcement agency is in charge of medicine," said David Dawson, deputy director of the West Virginia chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).
Dawson points to studies like one from the National Bureau of Economic Research to support claims that medical cannabis effectively alleviates pain for chronic ailments. The study also suggests that it can help reduce abuse of opioids.
Several people who spoke to 5 News said they're hesitant about recreational marijuana, but do see some medicinal benefits.
