Woodland City Council To Vote On Pot Ban

Woodland, Wash. – The city council in Woodland Washington is scheduled to vote on whether to ban retail recreational marijuana stores within city limits.

The Daily News reports that Monday's planned vote comes after a moratorium that was put in place a year ago.

If approved, Woodland would become the first city in Cowlitz County to ban retail pot stores outright.

It would join several cities in the state that have tried to do so, including Fife. That city is in litigation over its right to ban recreational sales.

Initiative 502 legalized marijuana in 2012. But it did not stipulate whether cities or counties could ban recreational pot. Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued an opinion in January saying local governments have the right to prohibit marijuana businesses. A judge in Benton County recently agreed by ruling that Kennewick has the power to ban pot businesses.
