Why I Dislike Dispensaries

good morning everyone!

this is a straight up rant. I’m sippin my coffee and taking a couple tokes of some disappointing cannabis....

i live in the Bay Area and like many have stated before, there are a lot of issues with dispensaries nowadays with recreational legalization. Every time I make a quick stop in one, I’m quickly reminded why it had been so long since the last time.... I only buy flower and I sure as shit am not going to pay upwards of $75 for some “good” weed... that I can’t smell, or touch, in many cases can’t even see. Yesterday I wasn’t even able to feel the bag I can see in to see how the buds feel. Oh and the people working in dispensaries are usually not those who should... I’ve rarely come across anyone with more knowledge than being able to read a THC percentage on a label. That’s another thing.... in a dispensary it seems to be more about a thc number than quality of buds... at least that’s what they think a selling point is. And my goodness, how arbitrary..... that thc percent could be from the top cola of the best plant in the harvest.... not each bag is separately Tested.

and speaking of harvest.....there are so many bags sold where the harvest and or packaging was 6months plus and the bud is wayyyy too dried out and has lost quality for sure.

I’m glad there are still private events where you can see, touch, smell, all the buds and then in most cases talk to the grower or friend of the grower...... and then walk out with a quality half Oz for $80-100 or more if you want real high high quality.

Alright thats all for now.

Last recreational bud I purchased (on a Colorado trip) was so dry and harsh I had to sip ice water between tokes because it burned my throat so bad. The buzz was nice but getting there was torture. I remember thinking "wow, I barely know what I'm doing and my shit's better than this!"

Varies a lot on the location/State you in, same goes with prices. Pre-Covid crapola they would let you smell it here in OR, for now you can't do that or hardly see it. Far as the THC numbers go folks w/o a clue shop that way and as they are the majority the shops will cater to that mindset. But I'm just "oldschool" and shop by my eyes and nose and don't give a rat's backside about numbers unless I'm looking for a CBD/THC mixture.

Yeah, in my state the legal medical weed comes in a sealed white plastic container. You're not allowed to open it in the store. Not their fault though, the laws are so stringent here and bud tenders are trying really hard just to follow the rules because too many Karens are watching and waiting for them to slip up so they can flip out at town hall meetings like "see! This is a horrible thing and we can't have these thugs peddling drugs in our neighborhood!!"

Grow your own
Better quality
Usually no more than about $10 oz
Covid free

I hear ya but that’s easier said than done. I’m trying to grow some on my balcony but it was more for the fun of growing something.... could have been a tomato plant know what I mean. But with nothing but attention it’s coming along alright despite my ridiculous pruning and stress Ive most likely given it.

i respect the covid and wearing a mask, but I’m not tripping off that.

yea People are stupid like that and will be oblivious to the ten liquor stores/ bars on the same block.
There are even studies that have shown crime in the immediate neighborhood of a dispensary went down. This study taking place in USA

that is very true.
And it can even vary by dispensary. There’s one in San Francisco where they have samples
Of their overpriced buds, IMO, that you can smell. Pre covid.
I’m surprised that you were able to smell lower end buds, pre covid or not.... because of how things have to be sealed.... but I guess that varies state to state?

Are there black market untaxed events in Oregon as well?

No on the black market events as part of Rec passing was they increased the penalties for selling illegally. Far as "sealed rules" go it has to be in a childproof container when it leaves the store, most places have it in glass jars with stoppers so they will pop the top and let you look/smell (you can't touch it) and if something that you want then they pick out of the jar and weigh the amount you want. There are a couple that have it all pre-weighed but I don't shop there (not that I shop that often as grow my own mostly as allowed 4 plants for Rec, usually to try a Strain I haven't had or an Indica to help me sleep as I don't need as much of that as my daytime medicine). OR gave a license to anyone that paid fee, so they have a glut of product (last year they grew like 3x what was sold previous year) so the price has tanked, you can get B-buds for $100-125 a zip (that with the 20% tax included so out the door price), grade A stuff is all over the place from $8-14 a gram kind of thing with tax.

A cross country cannabis caravan checking out how they do in all recreational states would be pretty rad.

they used to have dispensaries weighing it out in front of you but I don’t think anymore.... dif state regulations.

but last time I was really hitting the dispensaries was before recreational was legalized

I went to Colorado on vacation. Told the dispensary worker I wanted their best selling flower. I took it back to my room and tried it. Tasted and smelled like chemicals. It was cool that I could go to a store and buy weed, but seriously disappointing in the quality of their most popular choice. You’d think in a state where everyone has the choice to grow their own, the dispensaries would have some kick ass shit.

A lot of the unregulated stuff has some chemical crap taste. The thing is the way you buy isnt like a liquor store but it is exactly like a liquor store. Now my state has liquor everywhere, there's not a 'package' store and that is exactly what dispensaries are now. Its packaged, but now in such a way as to establish tracking and accountability. That removes all choice in what the market demand wants. Having the same choices and availability that other OTC controlled substances have.

The thread killer? Me. Moi? Ok I am passing along a bit of info about taxes our city has collected from the 1 dispensary that was allowed to open here. 62,000,000.00 in taxes was collected in the first year. Part goes to the state firefighters and police pension funds (that can they kicked down the road has some revenue now) and part is going to go towards community development in neighborhoods where law enforcement and prosecutors had a field day incarcerating minorities.
Well, all the BS aside, the money cannot be spent. With only one dispensary, giving out any information about the taxes they pay is not allowed, we know they collected that much but aren't allowed to say Who made it and thus allot it for budgeting needs. That's the wording more or less. 7,000 applications for the whole state at 5,000.00 dollars just to apply. 75 licenses were issued. Each city/county would need two, so that's 37 cities and a spare one for..who TF knows? 37 dispensaries for 17 million plus people and they can use the taxes if they have at least 2 dispensaries in the city. 62 million in just my city, idk if that's precise exactly because they wont release the fvcking information or the money just it can be moved into budgeting. The whole things fvcked at the moment, and people are pointing the finger at our governor, who legalized recreational marijuana, saying he's stealing the money and putting it in his pocket JFC! Theres barely any legal standing on banking with pot money let alone incorporating it into budgets. Most of the squawking is coming from those who know damn well the police and firefighters deserve that money! But seem to get real fvxking quiet about helping the minority communities, they'll have to wait their turn. I'm done.
