Are marijuana buds the best-sellers in Washington state, or do consumers prefer pot edibles such as brownies and cookies?
That's what cannabis industry analyst Headset looked at in its new report.
"So which products are most popular? And will edibles or drinks ever become the primary way users get high?" Headset asked.
To get some answers, Headset analyzed retail figures that spanned about two years and covered about 25 percent of legal pot sales in the state.
And while there are more choices these days, the most popular by far remained traditional marijuana flowers, or buds. They made up nearly 49 percent of all sales, according to the Headset report.
Edibles were the second most popular, but came in at just 13 percent.
Pre-rolled joints came in third at nearly 12 percent.
"Concentrates and vapor pens, which are newer crazes among marijuana users, are in the middle of the pack," the report stated. "While we can attribute this mostly to preference, it is possible that some of this difference is driven by the need to buy concentrates or oils less frequently due to higher potency."
The report delved further into the data to find that chocolates were the most popular edible.
And while their overall sales totals were low, the report found that the products growing fastest in popularity were live resin and carbonated beverages.
Marijuana flowers also were most popular at Bellingham's 2020 Solutions, which has stores on Iron Street and Guide Meridian. They made up 55 percent of retail sales in the last 30 days.
But concentrates were selling better than edibles at their stores, totaling 14 percent to 9 percent, respectively.
"We are seeing a shift in flower consumers moving to concentrates," said Aaron Nelson, senior vice president of operations for 2020 Solutions. "As far as edibles, we are seeing growth in beverages."
