Where to look on the plant for trichomes determination?

Hello Growers,
i have read from the vast data bank of 420 growers that sometimes it makes sense to harvest based on the buds that are most ready vs. cut the plant down. Is it safe to assume that the cola and buds throughout it would be ready first and then select buds among the flowers/branches that meet the criteria i am looking for? I have smaller buds on lower part of plant, larger buds on top branches. thanks.

When I have done a staggered harvest, I have cropped the tallest colas and left the lowers to continue maturing. Once the tall ones are out of the way, you can lower your light for the lowers.
