What is on my filter?

I removed the prefilter for cleaning and I saw this 'stuff'; on the filter. Is this dust? Mold? What's the best way to clean it?

If you are using an Ultrasonic Humidifer it could be from that, sum of em expel a dust like substance that sticks to most everything.

Is that the same as a cool mist humidifier? I do use one of those.

Can I use a plastic brush to clean it?

Probably calcium carbonate, it’s normally from “hard water”. A brush should work, if not vinegar or a product like CLR (calcium lime remover)

As Phytoplankton recommended there are # of options for cleaning yer filter. However is it worth cleaning, is it beyond its recommended life ? Perhaps if it is less than 6 months then maybe, if older than 6 months I would send it to the trash bin. More than likely the charcoal is coated with that dust and may not be working as intended, Just my two cents worth.

NYC has relatively soft water.

I took the filter outside and gave it a gentle cleaning with a plastic brush. A lot came off it. We'll see how it works now.

I used vaccum ...works great.... I get it quite often cuz I use a humidifier from hard water
