What did I make?

I have been using high proof vodka to make oil extractions. Normally I reduce in a double boiler then leave out for final evaporation till I have oil. Time was short and I was only able to reduce half way so I covered and put in the fridge. Later I noticed black solids had formed so I strained and got some "solid oil" a black goo that stayed together but when put on a wax paper plate spread like oil... it is very strong.

PS

I am also making more "purple oil" I will post here when I get going

You got some fraction of the dissolved solids (cannabinoids, etc.), separated from the rest of the mix. My first guess would be that you reduced the solvating capacity of the solvent (vodka) when you reduced the temperature, sorta like how caffeine is much less soluble in cold water than in hot. In this case the THC and other oily compounds became less soluble in the vodka when the temperature went down. The solid probably contains basically the same chemicals as in the liquid fraction, but a different ratio because different chemicals will have different solubilities in the solvent at a given temperature. Since you reported that it is strong, it probably contains more THC than the liquid fraction.

Hello I am completely new this forum and this process. I am trying to make medicinal cannabis oil. I must state first that I live in a state where it is illegal to buy or use the cannabis until very recently so it is extremely difficult to get something pure. I recently acquired 1/2 lbs of medicine of not the purest quality I am guessing and decided to try 2 separate approaches that I researched online for making the oil. My first attempt last night was with the rice cooker. I used 1/4lb of medicine in a glass jar and wooden spoon smashed and stirred with 190 proof everclear. Performed 3 washes and strained the mixture using coffee filters. I put the mixture into the ricecooker we had set up outside along with a fan. The mixture cooked down quickly but realized after the second addition of mixture the cooker had switched to warm instead of cook. I am thinking it was because the amount left in the cooker prior to adding the second batch was such a small amount of liquid. We noticed that the burnoff was taking longer and realized the problem. Reset the cooker to cook and again the mixture evaporated quickly. We noticed a small burned area at the bottom of the cooker. We transferred the mixture to a stainless steel measuring cup and allowed that to cook down on a coffee warmer. After hours of letting the mixture cook down again noticed tar like solids at bottom of cup. Transferred oil to new cup and allowed more cooking. The oil is there looks glassy on top but we have quite a bit of some type of residue at the bottom of the cup. What is it. Is it safe to consume? I recently saw a video of a guy showing the difference between poor quality oil and good by putting the residue on the tip of a paper clip and burning it. The burn showed black smoke. At first was thinking this could be caused by the clip itself. I tried this but my residue feel on the match that I was using and again the burn showed black smoke. I am very concerned since I want to use this as medicine for health issues not make my health worse. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Apologies for the long script. wanted to be thorough.

the problem is the vodka even 100 proof is one half water and you have to overheat the oil to get the water to evaporate. I use everclear (pricey usually just use it for tinctures) or pure denatured alcohol to avoid the water the trash the government makes them put in the denatured alcohol to poison you for not paying their tax boils off with the alcohol.

Your oil should be perfectly safe to use, you do not need great quality to make the oil i use leaves and stems to make mine, strip it with denatured alcohol and boil off the alcohol in a slow cooker- never tried to burn any of the oil but it does have a lot of chlorophyll in it so that may be your source of the smoke. I have treated 3 cancer patients with it and all 3 are presently cancer free WITHOUT surgery.
