The Board of Selectmen next month will hear from a medical marijuana dispensary seeking to locate in town.
Seven Point of Massachusetts, Inc., has submitted an application to open a registered marijuana dispensary at 3 Lan Drive, according to Town Manager Jodi Ross and a letter from attorney Douglas Deschenes.
The dispensary already has an agreement to lease 2,000 square feet of office space within the building at 3 Lan Drive, the letter said.
The dispensary is scheduled to ask selectmen for a letter of support, Ross told residents and business owners during an event Wednesday morning. Ross said the meeting would be on April 12, but Seven Point CEO Brad Zerman said that date is not yet confirmed.
"I asked, 'is there seven points on a marijuana leaf?' And there is. Who knew," Ross said.
All companies seeking to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Massachusetts must follow a set of steps: Submit an application of intent with a $1,500 fee; complete a management and operations profile with a $30,000 fee; ask for a letter of support or a letter of non-opposition; complete a certificate of registration with a $50,000 fee; and obtain a final certificate of registration.
Zerman said one of the things that attracted him to Westford were the carefully-crafted town bylaws for dispensaries.
Westford has a marijuana overlay district along most of Route 110 and in the Industrial A zone along Route 40.
Those locations were chosen because of their proximity to the highway and other medical treatment facilities.
"That Littleton Road area, it's really a safe area, it's well-lit, there's public transportation," Zerman said.
The CEO said he was also impressed by town officials' knowledge on the medical marijuana business.
"It seems like they understand that their community could really benefit from these a lot," he said.
Seven Point in October received approval from the Ayer Board of Selectmen to open a facility on 99 Fitchburg Road. The company is based in Illinois, where it is opening a dispensary in Oak Park.
Seven Point is not the only dispensary eyeing locations in Westford.
Nature's Remedy of Massachusetts, Inc., was contemplating opening a dispensary somewhere along Route 110.
According to Chris Kluchman, the director of land use management, that company has not yet asked for a letter of non-opposition.
