Heka Health Inc. hopes to begin construction by June 1 on its estimated $4 million medical marijuana production and distribution facility on Sgt. T.M. Dion Way.
It is also hoping to be fully operational by Jan. 1, Chief Executive Officer Mark A. Dupuis said Tuesday night.
Those plans are contingent upon final approval for the necessary state certification, he said.
Westfield's Planning Board gave its unanimous approval to Heka's site plans for creation of the facility in an existing building at 98 Sgt. T.M. Dion Way in the city's Northside.
The Planning Board's authority only extends to site plan approval and stormwater permit approval since a medical marijuana operation is an approved building use within an Industrial A zone, officials said.
Heka Health Inc. plans to produce marijuana infused products such as hashes/concentrations, tinctures, capsules/pills and others. The company expects to employ between 20 and 30 workers.
Mayor Brian P. Sullivan has announced support of the Heka Health's plans saying "I appreciate the way they are going about this. Their Board of Directors are local people, representatives of the industry and local doctors and this is an appropriate use of this location."
In addition to Dupuis, who owns the building and property, Dr. Joseph P. Keenan will serve as chief operating officer of Heka Health.
The company's attorney Thomas Keenan told the Planning Board that Heka Health also plans to establish medical marijuana dispensaries in Pittsfield and West Springfield. as part of the region's first medical marijuana production and distribution facility.
The building will be renovated to allow for growing, storing, and dispensary of the drug and all operations at the location will be regulated by the state, company officials said.
The location abuts Barnes Regional Airport and is located just a short distance from the Massachusetts State Police Barracks on the Turnpike just north of Exit 3.
