People in Colorado are still adjusting to life with legalized marijuana. While now legal in many places, marijuana can't be brought into airports. Authorities have placed large, green bins in airports where travelers can dispose of their weed stash with no questions asked. There is only one problem — no one is using them.
The noticeable bright green boxes aren't catching the attention of travelers. When the boxed first rolled out, they weren't clearly labeled. Now, they have signs describing what goes in them, and potential penalties for hanging on to marijuana in the airport. Colorado Springs, CO Police Lt. Catherine Buckley hopes this is a good sign.
"We hope that if they have marijuana, they opt to leave it in their vehicles or at home," Buckley said. For those who do not put marijuana in the amnesty box, the Colorado Springs city council is trying to decide what will happen to those travelers if they are caught with it in the airport. "We had talked about having jail time and a drug charge against someone as a possibility," said city council member Jan Martin.
Martin said potential punishments have been scaled back. "We wanted to be sure [that] whatever penalties were assessed, it did not include a drug charge that would go on someone's record or any jail time," Martin said. These boxes aren't going away, but the weed dropped in them will and will be taken to the Colorado Springs police department's evidence team and destroyed.
