Firefighters battling a 2-alarm fire at a Sacramento warehouse Tuesday morning stumbled on a marijuana-growing operation that initially raised suspicions, but was later determined to be a supplier of medical marijuana.
Crews found smoke pouring through the roll-up doors of a warehouse on the 1900 block of Railroad Avenue near Northgate Boulevard just after 5 a.m. Once the fire was out, they started to canvass the warehouse and found "multiple marijuana plants growing in different locations of the building," fire department spokesman Jonathan Burgess said.
The Sacramento Police Department was called in to investigate and found roughly 200 marijuana plants and six 18-gallon cannisters of dried marijuana. Police spokesman Sgt. Norm Leong said the grower was identified as United Non-profit Collective and appears to be a supplier of medical marijuana dispensaries.
Leong said they need to track down the building's owners to determine whether they had the proper license to operate and whether the electrical wiring was up to code. But he said the collective appears to be a supplier for legal marijuana dispensaries.
Leong said the fire started in an area filled with electrical outlets and growing equipment, but the cause has yet to be determined.
