Final action on an ordinance to ban all recreational marijuana operations in Walla Walla County will be up before county commissioners Monday. Commissioners will hold a public hearing at 11 a.m. to take comments on the measure, then vote on it afterward.
Although the commission voted on Sept. 2 to enact a ban on the growing, processing and sale of recreational marijuana in the county's unincorporated areas, it did not take effect immediately. Instead, commissioners extended a moratorium on marijuana zoning for 60 days to give county legal staff time to draw up the ordinance, as well as schedule one more public hearing on the matter.
At their September meeting, commissioners split 2-1 on the issue with Commissioners Jim Johnson and Perry Dozier supporting the ban and Commissioner Greg Tompkins voting against it. The additional hearing will "give the public another chance to comment on the ordinance when it has been drafted," Johnson said at the time.
Commissioners rejected recommendations by the county's Planning Commission to confine marijuana production, processing and sale to areas zoned for heavy industrial uses adjacent to Walla Walla and College Place. The city of College Place has also enacted a ban on recreational marijuana operations, while the cities of Walla Walla and Waitsburg have enacted zoning to allow production, processing and sale. The city of Prescott has enacted zoning for production and processing, but has banned retail sales.
