Washington marijuana sales took a sharp jump in July - the first month after the state closed medical dispensaries.
The state took in $23.5 million in excise taxes in July, a record. That was up from $20 million in June, according to marijuana data website 502data.com.
2016 sales so far total $347 million. 2015 had only $322 million for the entire year.
Combined with sales from processors and producers, total marijuana sales in Washington since legal sales began in 2014 now exceed $1 billion. That has resulted in $273 million in excise taxes.
Starting in July 2015, only retailers pay the 37 percent excise tax.
Pierce County was second in the state for July retail sales with $2.6 million in taxes paid and Thurston County was sixth at $1 million.
Pierce was third in producing counties and fifth in processing counties.
Clear Choice Cannabis did the most business in July in Pierce County and was No. 3 in sales in the state. It accounted for $396,443 in excise taxes.
Northwest Cannabis Solutions in Thurston County was the state's top processor in July with sales of $2 million.
Pierce County's Mahoney Greens was the state's second-ranked producer with $144,377 in sales for July.
