Spokane, Wash. — A Spokane group wants to expand marijuana sale restrictions to include churches and hospitals within the city.
Right now, marijuana stores cannot be sold within 1,000 feet of schools or daycares. A proposal will go in front of the Spokane City Council on Monday.
"There has got to be a cut off somewhere," John Ahern said, who is a sponsor of the initiative.
Ahern said the motivation behind the proposal is the sanctity of the church. He goes to Our Lady of Lourdes, which is located near a pot shop in Downtown Spokane. He and churchgoers like Mike McGuire say they've often smelled marijuana as they make their ways to Sunday mass.
"There has to be a handle on this and where we are going in the city of Spokane," McGuire said.
The proposal would ban the sale of marijuana within 1,000 feet of churches and hospitals.
His push comes weeks after a similar proposal that would've banned pot sales from happening in downtown Spokane.
If the Spokane City Council accepts the proposal it would then become an initiative for voters to decide on in 2017.
"We already got one rattlesnake in the bed with alcohol," Ahern said. "Why throw another one in there, which is really pot."
