King County, Wash. — The Metropolitan King County Council adopted legislation to allow retail marijuana stores in geographic areas where none exist currently, alleviating an oversaturation of marijuana shops in south King County.
Councilmember Claudia Balducci sponsored the ordinance, and was active in the debate and final passage of it. She said the Council's action improves access and equity in King County's fledgling marijuana industry.
"This will provide better access for marijuana patients and customers, while taking pressure off the small, unincorporated urban areas like Skyway and White Center that have seen a concentration of multiple stores," said Balducci.
One stipulation of the bill is stores need to be 1,000 feet apart, according to a news release.
Skyway resident Mark Johnston said the legislation comes too late because his neighborhood already has too many retail marijuana stores.
"I would really like to be a community that could be normal, and normal means about one licensed store for about every 15,000 residents," said Johnston. "Which means one in Skyway not five, which means one in White Center not nine."
