Vented hood or no?

Is it required to vent your light hood when using mh/hps? I've had it burn leaves at 48" from the canopy. Will hooking up ventilation to my hood correct that problem?

I'm not super informed on HP's but far as ik ur almost always supposed to have it vented they get super hot ( or so I've heard)
