Vancouver, WA--Tonight the city of Vancouver holds a public meeting on how the city might regulate access to medical marijuana.
Last year, the state legislature passed a new law creating a licensing system for medical marijuana dispensaries. But Governor Gregoire vetoed several key points of the bill. Vancouver City Attorney Ted Gathe says he expects the Washington legislature will revisit the issue next year.
In the meantime, he says, Vancouver has joined the growing number of Washington cities putting the law on hold while further discussions take place.
"The issue", Gathe says, "is the clash between federal and state law."
Gathe says cities are concerned about whether their enforcement of the state's laws would put them in conflict with federal statute.
"Right now, we have this problem, with federal law having it scheduled as this very serious drug, it can't be distributed through pharmaceutical outlets."
The city hopes to hear from the public about issues like how dispensaries might be zoned or otherwise regulated.
