University of Texas' Student Government is set to vote on whether the campus could become the first in the nation without medical marijuana laws to keep police from arresting anyone for possessing weed in quantities of less than 2 ounces.
Under the proposal, which is not binding, offenders would instead receive a citation. Student Government member and lead author Robert Love says the bill would also ask UT police to prioritize enforcing the tobacco ban over marijuana possession.
But the measure is controversial, and support from two student government members has gone up in smoke in the last 24 hours, Love said. He said one member was applying to law school; the other was somewhat high-profile on the Forty Acres and was concerned how his position might reflect on him.
If the vote passes it will go to a committee and be back for another vote next week. But, again, it's not binding.
"We don't have the authority to make UT do anything," said Love, a graduate student in the LBJ School of Public Affairs. "We're making a recommendation for a change after talking with the police."
The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Center at 2201 Speedway.
