The whopping $46 billion estimate from MMBD stems from Washington State's Office of Financial Management, which guesses that a fully operational state market could gross $1.021 billion per year.

Since Washington State has 2.15 percent of the US population, Medical Marijuana Business Daily ballparks a fully functioning national gross of $46.420 billion per year.

By comparison, gross sales of the nation's #1 most used intoxicant — booze — total $115 billion per year.

But there's plenty of caveats to go around. Washington State bases its consumption figures on United Nations data from 2006, which include the dumb notion that smokers use two grams of pot each session. We don't know about ya'll, but a two-gram session of any decent chronic would destroy most folks.

Washington State also estimates weed will cost $12 per gram — which is cheaper than black market highs of $20 per gram, but more expensive than the $2 grams many predict under full legalization. Remember, 90 percent of pot's price is risk.
