Uruguay plans to issue commercial growing licenses this year to produce recreational marijuana for distribution through the country's pharmacies, a senior government official said Tuesday.
"We are working on that," Milton Romani, secretary-general of the National Drugs Board, told reporters Tuesday in Montevideo. "Assigning licenses to produce a complicated substance isn't child's play."
Romani, who advises President Tabare Vazquez on drugs and alcohol policy, declined to say when the government will announce the winners of the licensing process that began last year. The South American country plans to issue as many as five licenses to grow as much as two tons of pot each. The number of bidders has been whittled down to 11, including U.S. entrepreneur Jordan Lewis.
Uruguay became the first country in the world to regulate cannabis for recreational, medicinal and industrial uses when it passed a law in December 2013. Registered pot users will eventually be able to go to a pharmacy and buy 40 grams a month, enough to make about 60 joints, at a price set by the government.
