Using an armored vehicle to break into an apartment duplex, Upland Police Department SWAT officers ended a tense 4 1/2 hour standoff this morning with the armed suspects who are believed to have robbed a marijuana dispensary Friday night, shot a male employee in the leg and tied up other employees before fleeing the scene.

Around 10:30, sounds of shattered glass and yells of "get down" could be heard when officers entered the house.

Moments later, three people were lying face down in handcuffs.

Police were continuing their search to see if anyone else was inside the house.

The armed men had robbed a marijuana dispensary in the 700 block of Mountain Avenue around 11 p.m. on Friday night before barricading themselves in an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Arrow Highway around 6 a.m., according to Upland Police Lt. John Moore.

The men, who were described by police as Hispanic, shot one of the male employees in a leg and had tied up employees before fleeing in their car with stolen marijuana and arriving at the apartment complex, about a mile and a half away from the dispensary.

The incident led to the evacuation of about 75 residents overnight to the nearby Magnolia Recreation Center, where they are being assisted by Red Cross volunteers.

The detective bureau, the entire patrol team, helicopter and SWAT assets were deployed, Moore said.
