The Ukiah City Council introduced an ordinance this week that could lead to a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries within the city limits.
The city has had a moratorium on dispensaries for about two years, but the new proposal would go further.
Council members cited the unresolved conflict between federal and state drug laws. Under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana remains illegal. But California’s Proposition 215, approved by voters in 1996, allows the use of marijuana for medical reasons.
Other cities are cracking down on dispensaries. Rohnert Park adopted a ban on dispensaries in February, and Cloverdale is considering a ban. Windsor tentatively approved a ban.
The Ukiah City Council will vote on the proposed ban at its next meeting.
