Police pulled over a car with a faulty brake light in Torquay and found almost £2,000 worth of drugs inside.

Half a dozen wraps of cannabis were stuffed inside a Tesco bag in the passenger footwell, magistrates in Newton Abbot were told.

There was also a smaller amount in a plastic box by the driver's feet.

The two men inside, driver Daniel Roskilly, 31, and passenger Steven Parr, 27, were tight-lipped when police asked why the car smelled so strongly of drugs.

At court, the pair admitted possession of a controlled drug of Class B.

The men, both users, said they bought in bulk to save money.

Prosecutor, Philip Sewell, said the Ford Focus was pulled over by police carrying out routine checks on Headland Road on August 12.

Roskilly later told police that the cannabis in the plastic box were his with the Tesco bag contents shared between them.

But in court Roskilly said the drugs in the bag did not belong to him after all.

Magistrates said it made no difference to sentence.

Roskilly, a tile worker, said he used cannabis to deal with his depression. Parr, a part-time builder, said he had not been in trouble with the police for a number of years.

The defendants, both of Rock Road, were fined and told to pay costs of £235 each.
