Pentonville Prison CCTV cameras captured the moment a drug dealer attempted to fly a drone loaded with cannabis and mobile phones into Pentonville Prison.
In the footage, a plain-clothes detective can be seen rushing from his undercover car after spotting the pilot-less aircraft hovering overhead.
The officer, a member of a specialist team tasked with tackling the increasing number of drones trying to enter the London jail, managed to pull the drone down by grabbing the black bag dangling from it with string.
It was carrying 118 grams of cannabis and two mobile phones wrapped in a black plastic bag.
The police unit, known as Operation Airborne, had been at HMP Pentonville to investigate another drone crash - but were tipped off by prison staff who saw the approaching on CCTV.
Pharmacology student Charlie Adifiyi, who was operating the remote-controlled device, managed to flee the scene on August 14 last year.
But the 21-year-old was tracked down using DNA found on the drone, and a police search of his home in Islington, North London, found a further 476 grams of psychoactive substance, which has a prison value of up to £38,000.
Adifiyi pleaded guilty to three counts of conveying a prohibited article into prison and one count of possession of psychoactive substances with intent to supply.
He was handed a three year prison sentence at Blackfriars Crown Court on Monday.
Prisons Minister Sam Gyimah, said: "I am determined to stem the flow of drugs into our prisons, and I want to pay tribute to the staff at HMP Pentonville and the police for preventing this haul from entering the prison system and undermining the stability and order at the jail.
"This conviction should send a strong message to others who may attempt to do the same; we will find you and put you behind bars."
Police set up the specialist unit to crackdown on drones earlier this year, when it was revealed that there had been 33 of the flying gadgets detected in or around jails in England and Wales in 2015.
The figures show a huge increase in their usage, with just two reported the year before and none in 2013.
