Latrobe, PA. - A Latrobe man is facing criminal charges for allegedly giving a 64-year-old co-worker a marijuana-laced cookie that landed her in the hospital.
Ronald L. Thompson, 50, of 1748 Lincoln Ave., Apt. 201, is charged with possession and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and recklessly endangering another person.
City police allege Thompson gave a cookie made with "marijuana butter" to Shirley Lisbon while on a break at Westmoreland Plastics on Gertrude Street in Latrobe on Feb. 25.
Lisbon was not aware that the cookie was tainted, police said Monday.
"She had no idea what was happening to her at the time and she had a very bad reaction to it," said Patrolman John Sleasman.
Lisbon told police that she left work that day at about 2:30 p.m. and began feeling ill and disoriented. She drove aimlessly until she parked along an unknown road about two miles away.
"She didn't even know where she was," Sleasman said.
Lisbon called her daughter, who was able to locate her, and began driving her to Excela Latrobe Area Hospital. When she became even more ill on the way, however, her daughter pulled over and called for an ambulance.
Lisbon was admitted to the hospital and was treated for marijuana intoxication and overdose, Sleasman said. Toxicology tests were positive for THC -- the intoxicating chemical in marijuana.
Lisbon was released the next day and has recovered from the incident, Sleasman said.
But she told police the only possible way she could have ingested the drug was in a cookie that Thompson had given her at work.
Police then interviewed Thompson, who initially denied giving Lisbon the cookie, but later admitted to giving one to her during a break without telling her that it contained marijuana and could harm her, police allege.
Thompson agreed to a search of his home, where, along with a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police allegedly found four cookies in his freezer.
Those cookies have been turned over to the state police crime lab for analysis, Sleasman said. Pending results of those tests, additional charges may be filed against a man that Thompson told police actually baked them.
Thompson is free on $1,000 unsecured bond pending a hearing before Unity Township District Judge Michael Mahady on March 14.
