Dewmar International BMC Inc. said Thursday that subsidiary U.S. Hemp Corp. is under contract with one of the vendors that has applied to operate Southern University's medical marijuana business and stressed that U.S. Hemp is not a potential vendor.

Southern had listed U.S. Hemp as one of the vendors who bid for the medical marijuana contract. The Dewmar news release did not identify U.S. Hemp's client.

Southern University Ag Center could not be reached for comment Thursday and wasn't available previously when applicants were announced.

The other applicants listed included Advanced Bio Medical; AquaPharm; Citiva Louisiana; Columbia Care; Med Louisiana; and Southern Roots.

Three of the firms – Citiva, Columbia and Southern Roots – unsuccessfully bid to operate the LSU AgCenter's medical marijuana business.

LSU and Southern hold the only state licenses for medical marijuana authorized by the state Legislature in 2015. Southern's contract, which covers five years, makes the companies responsible for all of the expenses involved in running the business. Southern has estimated the initial investment will range from $5 million to $7 million.

Dewmar said the school is expected to announce finalists within the next week, and those finalists will be required to make a formal presentation before a selection committee in August.

U.S. Hemp said it has helped its client locate and select executive staff, key personnel and cannabis industry experts, including a cultivation operations firm, architectural engineering firm, cultivation facility builder and master grower. If the client is selected, U.S. Hemp will assist the applicant in choosing research projects and selecting qualified researchers.

The company's statement noted that Dewmar board member Dr. Derrick Brooks, a Baton Rouge native and emergency medicine physician, was a contributing author in one of the Southern University applicant's submissions.

The press release included a statement from Brooks: "I am happy to be appointed as a key personnel medical practitioner with a very strong and diverse team of other professionals and health care experts in order to pursue the second and final cannabis cultivation and research license in the state of Louisiana," he said. "My focus will be in general cannabis therapeutic dosing for pain management; while medical director Dr. Donisha Dunn-Lombard's focus will be on psychiatry, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and pain. Dr. Ato Wright will focus on various types of cancer and oncology therapies. Our unique team of local physicians was organized by the Dewmar International executive staff."
