Two medical marijuana dispensaries in Aspen were broken into early Sunday, and the burglar managed to almost entirely clean out one of the businesses.
The suspect first struck Aspen L.E.A.F., breaking through a wire-mesh security window on the building’s rear side. But after leaving a small, jagged hole that he somehow wriggled through, “he didn’t steal anything, thank God,” said Billy Miller, owner of the outlet.
Police on Monday released two still images from Miller’s video-surveillance system of the suspect.
Brett Nelson, owner of Ute City Medicinals, wasn’t as lucky. After striking out at Aspen L.E.A.F., the thief gained access into Nelson’s dispensary through the ceiling around 12:10 a.m. Sunday, he said.
“He cleaned me out,” Nelson said.
Both owners planned to take their search for the suspect onto the Internet.
Nelson planned on posting video of the suspect on YouTube and at facebook.com/utecitymedicinals; Miller said he had a computer specialist also preparing to post the video on YouTube. High-resolution images and video footage of the suspect also are available at facebook.com/aspenpolice, according to a press release from the department.
The suspect is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and 140 pounds, with a shoe size of 8.5 to 9, the press release says. The thief wore a “white beanie, pullover jacket and Vans shoes” during the crimes.
Nelson, who has been in business 17 months, moved into his current space below Johnny McGuire’s on Nov. 1. He asked that anyone in the black market marijuana business, and postal and Federal Express employees to be on the lookout. Fellow dispensary operators should be watchful for anyone with 14 strains of marijuana, he said.
A sign on the front door of Aspen L.E.A.F. on Spring Street says no marijuana, cash or patient records are kept on the premises overnight. But the thief apparently didn’t read it.
Video shows the suspect leafing through L.E.A.F.’s cabinets and trying various doors, Miller said. There was a small amount of marijuana inside the business, but the suspect slipped back out the damaged window without stealing any of it.
Miller on Monday evening was trying to find some lumber to board up the window. But he said he might have to sleep in his store.
“I feel completely vulnerable right now,” he said, adding he will be open for business today.
Nelson also said his business will continue to be open seven days a week. The value of the stolen marijuana wasn’t known last night; Nelson declined to comment on it.
Anyone with information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest is asked to contact Aspen Police Det. Ian MacAyeal at 920-5400. Police contacted other dispensary owners on Monday, advising them to heighten their security measures.
