A pair of dueling initiatives competing for the honor of legalizing medical marijuana in Arkansas may end up canceling out each others efforts.
The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment (AMMA) and the Arkansas Medical Cannabis Act (AMCA) could possibly contend with one another at the ballot this November, reports Arkansas Online.
While the AMCA has already been certified for ballots since July, officials for the AMMA initiative are confident that their proposal will also be approved.
The possibility of dueling measures could end up undermining the effort to legalize medical cannabis altogether, however.
"The only thing we can do is educate people and tell them they have choices and just pray that they make the right choice," said Melissa Fults, campaign manager for Arkansans for Compassionate Care, to Arkansas Online.
"I mean, that's all we can do. We don't intend to fail. It's going to make it much more difficult. We'll be fighting on two fronts, but I think we have enough heart and enough volunteers that we'll overcome it," Fults added.
States such as California and Maine have also had the problem of legalization measures competing with each other, but instead were consolidated into one bill in order to strengthen the chance of winning the approval of voters.
As it stands, both Arkansas groups are not discussing the possibility of a team-up.
