MARION, Ind. (NLI) - Police acting on a tip stumbled upon two tons of marijuana at a Marion house on Wednesday, taking 10 people into custody.
"In my career, in my travels, I've never seen a bust this large," Grant County Sheriff Oatess Archey said of the 5,300 pound seizure.
A "suspicious activity" call came in around 10:08 a.m. on Wednesday to a Crime Stoppers tip line. An officer responding to the call at 2501 S. 600 E. called for backup after noticing what he called "suspicious drug activity."
Police found 356 bales of marijuana in two large trucks. The bales weighed between nine and 30 pounds each. One truck had Texas plates, while the other was from Indiana. The Grant County officials wouldn't say who owned the trucks.
The Sheriff's department brought in Marion Police, the Joint Effort Against Narcotics taskforce, Drug Enforcement Agency agents from Ft. Wayne and the Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Enforcement Division to help with the investigation.
"We worked into the late hours until about 3 o'clock this morning," Archey said on Thursday.
Along with the marijuana, 10 people from Indiana and Texas were also seized in the raid.
Kelley Fanning, 48, and Frankie Darlene Fanning, 44, who lived at 2501 S. 600 E., were arrested. Hoosiers Judy Ellen, 47, and Linda Lloyd, 42, are also being held in the Grant County Jail.
The six people authorities are holding from Texas are:
* Arnoldo Lopez, 26
* Eduardo Ramirez, 29
* Raul Resio, 51
* Heriberto, Salinas, 28
* Gilbert Garcia, 30
Police did not release the sixth name to NewsLink.
Charges are pending for all 10 people. The Fannings are facing charges of conspiracy to deliver marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance, Grant County Prosecutor James Luttrull said.
If convicted all individuals could face anywhere from two to eight years in prison.
