India - The tribals of Kumily grow ganja (marijuana) in their backyards. According to their ‘king’ Ariyan Raja Mannan, it is all legal as his predecessor had obtained permission from former prime minister Indira Gandhi, whom he had met to ask permission to continue with the tribal tradition of cultivating and using ganja in their daily lives.

The former king, Raja Mannan, came to be known as ‘Delhi Pandy’ after his ‘historic trip’ to New Delhi to legalise ganja in his land. Wilson Kannan, 32, a member of the community police team at the Periyar Tiger Reserve, acknowledged that he had a ganja plant in his house. “I have saved the ganja plant because it is our tradition. Many of our relatives in our neighbourhood have one or two plants at home. Many tourists and relatives who visit our homes are surprised to see the plants,” he said. He added that neither he nor his father uses ganja.

Malapara Thevan, 65, who works in a spice estate, also has a plant and uses the product as does another Kumily resident, Balu, 40, who goes downhill for fishing. He said ganja helps him relax.

R. Vella Kamu, a social worker and a friend of Delhi Pandy, said ganja plants were common in this region. “While the older generation use ganja, youngsters keep the plants as a traditional practice,” he said. District collector Ashok Kumar Singh, however, told this newspaper that he was not aware of ganja plants being grown in Kumily. “I had no clue about ganja being grown in backyards as a tradition. We will not allow anyone to cultivate ganja,” he said.
