The brother of the leader of the Tohono O'odham Tribe was arrested earlier this month on drug charges.
Nicholas C. Juan, the 39-year-old brother of Chairwoman Vivian Juan-Saunders, is accused of possessing 137 pounds of marijuana on Sept. 15.
A criminal complaint alleges that the marijuana was found after the tribal chairwoman's brother was pulled over by a Tohono O'odham officer. Juan was released from custody last week on a $5,000 bond, said Sandy Raynor, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office of Arizona.
Juan-Saunders, a critic of the Department of Homeland Security for what she says is a lack of agents patrolling the reservation to deter drug and migrant smugglers, said through a spokesman: "Like in any other situation, we need to let justice take its course." In 1999, Juan-Saunders' sister, Mary Audrey Dolaretta Juan, 49, was arrested after federal agents stopped her with 356 pounds of marijuana.
She pleaded guilty in 2000 to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and was released from prison in May 2002, according to the federal Bureau of Prisons.
