MONCTON, N.B. (CP) - A need for language translation has delayed court proceedings against 16 people facing charges after police raids on a marijuana grow operation near Moncton, New Brunswick.

A temporary translator was sworn in Wednesday to help the accused, all Vietnamese, understand the charges which include the production of marijuana, trafficking and possession of crime proceeds.

The accused are expected to return to court in Moncton on Thursday.

Raids on 14 area homes on Tuesday netted police more than 5,000 plants and more than $100,000 in cash.

In Hamilton, Ont., police have charged five people as part of the same probe after raids on several homes.

The investigation began three months ago when police started monitoring frequent flights between the two cities.
