Lamar County deputies on Tuesday seized 110 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop and arrested two Louisiana men.

"This is probably, since I took office, the third-largest amount seized at one time," said Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel, who took office in January 2004. He added that the drugs have a street value of between $77,000 and $110,000.

The suspects are both 28 and are from Houma, La., Rigel said. Their identities were not released because they have not been formally charged.

They were arrested when their 2004 Nissan Maxima was stopped on Mississippi 589 where it crosses over Interstate 59.

"The officer (who pulled the car over) could tell something wasn't right," Rigel said. "They were giving conflicting stories about where they were going and why they were there."

He said a drug-sniffing dog was brought in and indicated that drugs were in the trunk.

Also seized was a handgun and about $1,700.

The two have not yet been formally charged, and Rigel said he expected that would happen today or possibly Thursday.

"In the last three years, we've seized about 1,000 pounds of marijuana," Rigel said. "But we usually don't find this much at once."
