DENVER -- The Colorado State Board of Health has rejected a petition asking to add Tourette syndrome to the list of chronic debilitating medical conditions that qualify a patient for a medical marijuana license.
"The vote was unanimous," according to Mark Salley, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Health.
No medical conditions have been added to the approved list since voters passed Amendment 20 in November 2000.
The eight approved medical conditions are cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS positive, cachexia, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures and persistent muscle spasms, according to the current application.
Two doctors testified before the board Wednesday.
"They presented convincing testimony that there was not sufficient reason to add to the list of medical conditions in Amendment 20," said Salley.
"I don't see what we add to the mix by actually adding Tourette's under these circumstances," Glenn Schlabs, the board's president, told the Denver Post.
Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, stereotyped, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Medical-marijuana advocates have also petitioned to add post-traumatic stress disorder to the medical-marijuana list. A decision on that is expected shortly.
