Were there alot more people smoking marijuana back then? Was it more publicly accepted back then? And did you enjoy smoking more back then, then nowadays?

I wouldn't know, but I would say a little of yes and a little of no. I'd say it was morely accepted in 30s or 40s, maybe? around the prohibition of alcohol.

Am I right?
Actually the opposite was true, weed was relatively unknown except by jazz muscians until late 30's, then the campaign against weed was started. Harry Anslinger use a lot propaganda to sway the general public into believing that weed was an evil thing. It was looked down more upon then alcohol during prohibition. So during the 30's and 40's weed had a really bad reputation, one that basically showed up out of no where because no one had any interaction with it.

60's and 70's it wasn't legal obviously, but from what I've heard it was generally more acceptable, since it had a been around a while. The hippie movement did a lot to shed a positive light on weed that Anslinger had desperatly built against.

Harry Anslinger.....every time I hear that name I shudder. That man has a lot to do with why marijuana is illegal today. I remember researching about how he crusaded against the hemp industry just because he had vested interests (MONEY!) in the competing companies that were against hemp. The bullshit ideals and values he spread on so many ignorant people still poisons many today. ARGHHHHHHHHHH!

I don't know if more people were smoking in the sixties and seventies, it seemed like it because we were more visible. Back then we wore the uniform, if you say a guy with long hair or love beads and bell bottoms or a girl with the uniform you knew they smoked. When you walked on a college campus or through a park someone was allways asking if you wanted to buy pot or other things. In the sixties pot was considered the same as hard drugs and you could get twenty years if you were caught. In the early seventies pot was decriminalized and it became a minor offense unless you were caught growing or dealing large amounts. If you were caught with a large amount it was assumed you were dealing. I would have to say that it wasn't more accepted then today just more out in the open. I wore the uniform then, I had hair down past my ass and I was hassled a lot, not by the police but by rednecks. When you had long hair in the sixties some idiot always wanted to beat your ass. Restaurants would ignore you and the patrons would make loud comments about what scum you were. It was a great time but it did have its' bad side too.

I know exactly what you mean, now that I know that the criminalization of marijuana in the US was basically done by this one man I get a little pissed. We have several organizations that are just trying to get marijuana decriminalized. One man made it illegal and many are fighting to change it.

The ironic thing is that Anslinger was a huge pill popper when he was older because of a list of medical ailments, he became addicted to morphine and other pain killers. Had he not made weed illegal theres a chance he would have prescribed it as an alternative the the opiates and pharms he was addicted to. In a way, what goes around comes around, thought I wish he had been addicted to coke or something else, just to see how much weed isn't what he told everyone what it was.

I seem to rmember hearing that Jimmy Carter legalized medical MJ, and it was made criminal again when Bush Sr. took power. Whats the story on this?

Jimmy Carter did not actually legalize medical marijuana, however he had a very open attitude towards personal use:

"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself...Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marijuana in private and personal use." Cannabis: A History

Unfortunatly Peter G. Bourne, President Carters Special Assistant for Health Issues, wrote illegal prescriptions for an assistant of his for Quaaludes. When the anti-drug movement heard about this the hope for legalizing marijuana fell through the cracks.

Then Reagen took over. His attitudes towards marijuana were extremly negative and thus began a new assault on marijuana. Bush only built upon what Reagan had started.

Where are all the older hippies at? I know some one on here remembers the 60's/70's. I didn't know jimmy carter had such a marijuana policy. Hell I wasn't even born when he was president. Personally I don't agree with much he says. My mom was born in '64 she tells all kinds of stories about how she used to smoke and do speed. She doesn't do anything now, but she doesn't care if I do. Thats about my extent of knowledge on the '70s, but I've heard some stories.

We're still around its just that we don't wear the uniform anymore so you don't notice us. In the sixties we knew that when we came into political power we would legalize pot, but a bunch of the old hippies joined corporate America and it was no longer fashionable to do drugs so they are now against them. I graduated high school in sixty seven and the following summer was the summer of love. I went into the military in sixty eight, the Air National Guard. In the sixties the Guard wasn't being sent to Nam so it was weekend warrior instead of getting shot at in Nam. I remember a lot of the sixties but not all of it because they say if you remember the sixties you weren't there.

Heh, I'd like to go back to the 60's and give out some really dank sticky silver haze, it would blow their minds..

I would be great. Almost as good as some of the stuff I smoked then.

well, decent pot was still grown in the sixties, but wasn't grown with HPS lights and hydroponics. I mean, I would think some people back then wouldn't even recognize it as pot at first.

I love it when kids think they know what the weed was like twenty years before they were born. You have never seen the Thai sticks or Buddha bud that came out of Thailand. That stuff would make you drag your dick in the dirt. Some of the high quality bud that came out of Mexico would make you hallucinate. You think we wouldn't recognize what's grown today as pot, that's the arrogance of youth and I forgive you for it, because you are a kid and when you grow up you might be a little more humble.

My dad told me a story about smoking Thai sticks, he said a couple friends of his in Vietnam brought some home from the war. He also told me of the times he smoked Acapulco Gold, and strains called Panama Red, Jamaican Red (have you heard of these?) He also told me exotic tales of Afghani Hash and Hash Plant that left me with the envy of wishing I had grown up during the 60's and 70's :headbanger: :allgood:

Not only heard about them but smoked them too. I still have my Panama red belt buckle. There was also some amazing stuff coming out of Africa at the time.

That's awesome! And there was a belt buckle named after Panama Red? If there are any more of the like, are there places you can buy them? Man I'd love to have a buckle like that!

I doubt that you will find a Panama red belt buckle today. I bought when I was in high school and I will have my forty year reunion next year.

Oh well, I can still dream. Your high school reunion should be fun, a night dedicated to visiting Memory Lane. :peace:
