A plan to legalize marijuana for medical use in Tennessee brought up some important questions at the state Capitol on Tuesday. Opponents are concerned too many people would be able to get their hands on medical cannabis unless the bill specifies which conditions or diseases would qualify for treatment. House Bill 1385 stalled in committee and now the bill's sponsor, state Rep. Sherry Jones, D-Nashville, has a chance to go back and make some changes that would give it more hope of moving on. The legislation would enact a Medical Cannabis Act in Tennessee that would allow patients with a card to be prescribed medical cannabis.
The bill already lists many diseases and conditions for which medical cannabis could be prescribed, including cancer and AIDS, but it also lists conditions like severe nausea. Some lawmakers said the list was far too broad. Other Democrats expressed concern the bill would not pass as is, so it was rolled for further discussion. Jones said she does not view this as a defeat.
"This is not the 60s. It's not the 70s. All the hippies have grown up now. So we need to move forward. We need to move up to 2014 and look at the other 22 states that already use this, that know how to dose it. There are some who have been using it for 16 years," she said. Jones plans to go back and remove a small section of the bill and define exactly which diseases could be treated with medical cannabis in Tennessee. It will come up again in the same Health subcommittee next week.
