One of the hotly contested issues on the November ballot in Arkansas is Issue 5: medical marijuana.

The issue would allow marijuana to be used for medicinal purposes in Arkansas, but still make it illegal under federal law to use, sell, or cultivate it for non-medicinal purposes.

One of the biggest opponents to the bill is the Family Council Action Committee. They say they are "dedicated to promoting, protecting, and strengthening traditional family values through the political process."

FCAC calls this measure a backdoor effort to legalize marijuana in Arkansas.

One of the issue's biggest supporters is Arkansans for Compassionate Care. On its website, there are several stories from Arkansans - including a U.S. Air Force veteran - who say medical marijuana helped them deal with their pain and medical issues.

They list dozens of organizations who they say support medical marijuana including the American Nurses Association and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Steve Jenison, policy advisor for Arkansans for Compassionate Care, and Scott Mesker, spokesman for FCAC, met Thursday on "THV 11 News at 6:00" to debate the issue with Dawn Scott.
