Police seized more than $1.2 million in cash and bank accounts following a year-long investigation that broke a marijuana distribution network centered in the city, city police said.
Police believe this is the largest cash seizure in the history of the Oneida County Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Three people were indicted by the U.S. Attorney’s office for conspiracy to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana.
The investigation by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies found that for about the last two years, Tucker and the other suspects purchased about 50 pounds of marijuana each month outside of Oneida County and distributed the drug in the Rome area, police said.
Edward Tucker was initially arrested July 2 following a complaint by local FasTrac Markets, in which it was determined Tucker was in the process of laundering thousands of dollars, police said.
Edward Tucker and Katerina Heissner, 18, of 523 River Rd., Rome, were each carrying $6,000 in cash, and police found another $120,000 in cash and Western Union money orders inside Tucker’s car, police said. Police also found about a half-pound of marijuana in the vehicle.
Edward Tucker was initially charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, police said, while Heissner was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.
Edward Tucker was also charged with two federal firearm violations, as well as money laundering — for his attempts to conceal the proceeds from marijuana sales — and witness retaliation against people he believed to be working with law enforcement, police said.
Four pounds of marijuana, with a street value of more than $16,000, was seized, along with various weapons and four vehicles belonging to Edward and Theresa Tucker, police said.
The investigation is still continuing, and further arrests may be pending, police said.
