Thousands of dollars have been raised in the first few months of 2016 for the battle to legalize medical marijuana in Arkansas.
Two initiatives to legalize medical marijuana have been approved and are in the process of gathering signatures to appear on the November ballot. One was approved by former Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and one by Attorney General Leslie Rutledge.
Two groups have registered to get the initiative on the ballot, Arkansans United for Medical Marijuana and Arkansans for Compassionate Care. Each raised thousands of dollars in the first months of 2016.
Arkansans United for Medical Marijuana was given $25,000 by the Bevans Family Limited Partnership in February, according to Arkansas Ethics Commission documents. The group has yet to spend any of the money, according to the latest financial reports available.
The group Arkansans for Compassionate Care 2016 raised more than $4,000 in January and nearly $7,000 in February, according to ethics commission documents. The group spent its funds on travel, postage, people gathering signatures, t-shirts and more.
Opposing the legalization of medical marijuana is the group Coalition for Safer Arkansas Communities. The group reported that it hasn't received any funding thus far, according to financial documents.
In order to get an initiative placed on the November ballot, each group needs to gather and turn in 67,887 certified signatures from 15 different counties to the Secretary of State Mark Martin.
