Theflavorzone's First Grow! XXX OG - Hell's Angel's OG - 300W LED - Hydro

hey everybody! i'm new to these forums, super excited to get started :cheertwo:

my girlfriend and i decided on a snap impulse to buy a couple clones and build a structure to grow in. we constructed a PVC frame in a loft above one of the bedrooms in the house and covered it in panda film, and secured the joints with epoxy putty. it's pretty sturdy! inside, we hung up a 300W LED lamp (right now we're designing a blueprint for an adjustable light frame so we can hang multiple and move them as the plant grows - in the meantime the light is hanging from the corners) and are using an oscillating fan to keep airflow up.

pics are coming soon! basically, this whole project sprung up rather quickly and we haven't had time to properly document, but that changes tomorrow :thumb: i'll post a quick phone pic i took of the plants while we were still setting up the LED panel.

plant info:

plant #1 (named Sheila): strain is XXX OG. when we picked her up, the stem got severely bent on the ride home :( we immediately braced it with a small dowel and it appears to be healing, but i think her roots also got a bit damaged when transplanting into the DWC so all her resources are going into healing herself right now. i believe in sheila!!

plant #2 (named Aunt Jemima): strain is Hell's Angels OG (bought it as Biker OG but i prefer the original name). she's already expanding into the space pretty nicely but i'd love to get some tips on any more LST-ish stuff i can start to do before going into flower. super healthy, super pretty!! proud of her!

general info:

currently in veg stage, picked up from the clone shop as "pre-flower teens." they appear to be fairly late into the veg cycle, and i can see pre-flowers forming. i'd love to get your opinions on their age based upon the pic below - will post more updated ones ASAP! hoping to put them in flower for at least 9 weeks!

sheila is on the right, aunt jemima on the left :circle-of-love:

the build is, as i'm sure you've gathered by now, an indoor hydro. i'm using a top feed DWC for each plant - they're each sitting in a 5 gallon pot in rockwool with a bottom/side layer of clay pellets. it's very DIY! i think all of you will enjoy the pics
:smokin2:

the humidity and temperature will eventually be automated with a raspberry pi - i'm sure it's not exactly appropriate to post all the updates on that here because it's not strictly grow-related but i'll provide brief mentions of how the code is going!

i'm currently running 3 feed cycles a day - 20 minutes directly onto the rockwool, morning/afternoon/evening. i'll up that to 4 times a day and automate it with the RasPi once the babies start getting ready to flower.

the nutes are general hydroponics's flora series starter kit (General Hydroponics GH51447 - Flora Starter Kit) using the recirculating feeding schedule!

alright, that's it for now guys! i'll be sure to post more pics today and start journaling by date.

Nice plants, and great set-up! The perfect recipe for a great grow. Can't tell you how old they are but hoe tall are they? And do you plan on veging much longer, because remember they will stretch 2-3 times the size they are now. Other than that everything looks great, and keep up the awesome work!

thanks so much for the reply!! i'd estimate they're about, eh, a foot and a half? i'll be sure to take some height pics later :)

and holy shit i didn't realize so much of the growth comes from flowering stage!! i'm hoping sheila can buff up her roots and fix that bent stem (looks like i accidentally super cropped my plant before i even started growing lol) so i can switch the lights to a 12/12 cycle.

is there anything i should do with the stems/branches to get ready for the flowering stage? i have a general understanding of lollipopping and topping (but i also understand it's not useful to top this late into vegging). i'm thinking of building a cheap little scrog to put over these lovely ladies :slide:

again, thanks for the response! looking forward to getting feedback from this community going forward. stick around!!

oh also i just noticed you're 19! me too! socal resident here though haha

Haha so 18 inches is a good height to flip but since you have those root problems, I'd wait. You could try cutting the plant down to about 10 inches and bend them both over and that will create a bush and they will be able to veg a lot longer and have many more colas. But it's all up to you man... I would recommend if you do that, to let her grow and fix herself for a week and a half to 2 weeks and then start training

can i perform any variation of that technique without cutting the plants? i wanna try to boost the growth as much as possible / make it bushier, but i can't spend another 2 weeks in veg time :(

pics coming soon, btw! i wanted to post my day 1 journal a few hours ago but i'm super fuckin tired. just got the girls fed, gonna make a full post tomorrow. to summarize, sheila's yellowing a tiiiiiiny bit on her new growth + is becoming a little bottom-heavy (massive cluster of leaves towards the bottom), and aunt jemima is trucking along perfectly. in other news, sheila's roots have finally gravitropism'd all the way down into the water! i was wondering when she'd catch up to her companion lol

Day 1 - Off To A Decent Start

the plants are doing well! let's take a look at the structure to give you all an idea of what i'm working with:

outside_view.JPG

the outer lights are on just to show you the frame - they're usually off 24/7.

now, let's take a look inside! here's the main setup, with LEDs installed and all:

plants60.JPG

some pics of sheila:

sheila_yellowing.JPG

a few of her leaves near the top appear to be yellowing a little. since i've posted this, it's become less extreme, but it's still worrying.

sheila_splint.jpg

this is the splint we attached less than 25 minutes after picking her up from the store! it's holding pretty well, and it appears that her stem is knuckling up and rebuilding itself nicely :high-five: hopefully i'll be able to take this off in the next few days.

sheila_cluster.jpg

this is what i meant when i said sheila was getting a little bottom-heavy - there's a HUGE cluster of leaves towards the bottom. because she's so weak (roots are still recovering + the splint) i'm afraid to trim any of these, but we'll see!

sheila_side.jpg

this is just a side shot of sheila :)

now onto aunt jemima:

jemima_side.jpg

big beautiful leaves!

jemima_top.jpg

since i took this pic, the top part has sprouted quite a bit more!

jemima_top_2.jpg

another angle.

okay, that's all for now! i've tied the plants down at a ~30-degree angle so the bottom leaves can get more light. nighttime begins!! will take more pics in ~6 hours when the girls wake up

:grinjoint:

Sweet! Yea I was just going to say bend them over for a week and then start flowering would be my best suggestion if you don't want to wait and you don't wanna cut them. Anyways they look great! Keep up the awesome work

awesome, thanks so much man!! i kinda kept the apical buds bending towards the light still (the plants kinda look like an S curve horizontally), is that the right thing to do? also, should i be concerned about the slight yellowing on top of sheila?

How far away are they from the light? Could need a little calmag next watering too. Have you been feeding nutes?

mmmm, now that they're bent away i'd say they're about 10 inches to a foot away at the closest point.
yep, been using nutes! just made a quick 1gal solution and topped the girls up because their ph was running a little high

day 2 journal coming soon! taking pics right now. stick around!

Day 2: Thank God I'm Dating A Photographer

so my gf busted out her macro lens today and also performed color corrections on the photos! the quality of photography, as you'll see, is much better as a result :P

here's how i bent the plants:

i think i'm getting more even light coverage on the plants now which is good. should i bend them more or is this angle okay?

pics of sheila:

sheila_splint1.jpg

healing up nicely! keep on it sheila :cheertwo:

cluster3.jpg

sheila's big cluster!

sheila_promising.jpg

a couple promising offshoots reaching towards the light

sheila_top.jpg

her leaves are drooping a bit, but only noticeably near the top - what does that mean?

sheila_redness.jpg

still a little red, not getting any worse which is good

sheila_yellow.jpg

yellowing has become less intense!

now for aunt jemima:

July_23rd_2016-24.jpg

that's my girl!

jemima_side1.jpg

new stems are sprouting up :D

jemima_redness.jpg

her upper stems have taken on a fairly deep pink color, not sure how i feel about that

jemima_promising.jpg

at the very bottom, this one little offshoot has taken the spotlight!! it appears to be getting the most direct light so that makes sense

jemima_sprout.jpg

tons of new sprouting points!

the aforementioned 1 gallon of solution seems to have helped a bit - pH has dropped to around 5.7.

as always, stay tuned! suggestions welcome.

:thanks:

Alright the only thing I'd say is maybe raise your light a bit but that's just my opinion. I guess if it's not burning the leaves then you can leave it. I keep mine about 24 inches away or so

by "burning" do you mean the figurative "applying way too much heat" or the literal "setting on fire"?
just asking so i know what to be looking out for lol

also, is the angle of the plants good or should i apply any other LST with my handy twist ties?

Haha just way too much heat lol the leaves will start to curl upward if they get heat stress. It will essentially look like your leaves are turning into a taco lol anyways probably just leave them be for now but if you do apply more LST or bending, make sure you tie the stem down at the base on the opposite side your bending her so you don't pull her out of the cube

just built a quick little scrog out of the leftover PVC from the frame and some bamboo plant stands! made the grid out of some sewing thread my gf had lying around. pics coming soon! also i think i figured out a way to raise the light with zip ties without having to remount it completely (waiting until i finish the adjustable frame to do that)

Hope all is well in your world.

Is this grow still alive?

We would love to be updated with some pictures and info.

How about posting a 420 Strain Review?

If you need any help with posting photos, please read our Photo Gallery Tutorial.

I am moving this to Abandoned Journals until we get updates.

Sending you lots of love and positive energy.
