Abstract
Various purified products were obtained from American-grown hemp and their physiological potencies estimated by two assay methods. The results of these comparative assays have been expressed in terms of a standard fluid extract of Cannabis. A potent oil distillate was obtained which corresponded approximately in physical characteristics and physiological activity to the most highly purified products described by European workers. This "red oil" or "cannabinol" produced typical effects by direct percutaneous application. Intravenous doses of 0.25 mgm. per kilogram produced definite effects in dogs, whereas, intravenous doses of 50 and 100 mgm. per kilogram did not cause death. The chemical characteristics of the purified drug are being subjected to further study.
These studies were aided by a grant from the Committee on Therapeutic Research, Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry, American Medical Association. In addition to this support, the Government narcotic agencies supplied considerable quantities of the crude drug. For this cooperation we are particularly obliged to Mr. J. B. Greeson, District Supervisor of Narcotics, and to Mr. Lew Wallace, Secretary of the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy. Further substantial assistance was obtained through the National Youth Administration Student Aid Fund which provided the services of a number of medical students for the biological work and a number of graduate chemical students for the purification procedures.
