Hi All
I'm very excited to be here. I've been on another site for a while and just decided to pick up my toys and head where there is a more positive vibe. The response I've gotten from you guys so far has been outstanding. It's about community right? That's how it feels here.
So the background..some years ago, I built a grow box out of an under counter cabinet. It looked like something it wasn't and worked great. I had a few great grows out of it before we moved into a nicer house. I was a little concerned with continuing with it as it housed a 400w HID system and the heat coming off that bad boy made growing prohibitive in the summer months not to mention expensive. I trashed it, sold off my HID stuff, built a brand new box (which I'm very proud of) and went with @TimberGrowLights, 200w, Citizen CLU048 fixture.
I'm currently running the entire box at 175w right now. That's everything, not just the light. The light is probably running at about 140w. Now that I'm in flower, I'm increasing the wattage by about 20w every other day. In veg, I was running it about 40% to 50% so about 100w on the light and 30ish watts of fans and other stuff.
I call it the "overkill" box as I've got a lot of stuff going on that cost me more than it should have, sound familiar?, but are just fun things to have. I had a little scratch so I figured, what the heck. Bluetooth temp and humidity monitoring, spy cam, kill-a-watt power strip, not one but 2 carbon filters and a totally enclosed, soundproofed fan box...you know..stuff you don't need.
The box dimensions are about 4' t x over2' d x 2' w. This was right after I finished it. The inset door is key and the locking mechanism is a...get this, TotLock! Lol! Magnetic and invisible.
So basically, this is what the outside looks like. With the exception of many brewery stickers I've been pasting on the front of it, that's it. It's on casters so it's easy to move, I should make them bigger honestly, and I can work on it.
This is the interior setup. I did a scrog in my first grow but I don't like it as I can't pull the plants out and really look at them carefully so I got rid of that I went back to, don't gasp, defoliating, lst and topping. I also, at @TimberGrowLights recommendation, took off the angelina's for improved light spread and reduction of possible hot spots as my footprint is pretty small.
The big thing for me was not having to have drain pans under the plants so I was able to come up with a system when I water, the runoff passes right through the shelving and goes into a tray below. The tray is a mini fridge drain tray and slides right out so I can flush and water without the mess. The shelving also provides space for airflow so nothing gets "sour" underneath the plants.
The interior is totally caulked, light and air sealed. I've got a blackout tarp with two zippers on the inside of the door for light proofing and a light baffle on the air intake.
This picture is from this week. I've got two critical and one papaya in flower. I've topped and lst'd them to keep them low.
This image is from the cam...1st day of flower from seed which was on Monday.
This pic is from the app on my phone that helps me to monitor temps and humidity without opening the box.
Cool huh?? LOL I love stupid stuff like this.
In my first grow, I ran into temp issues. I live in NorCal and this summer got really hot and over 100 degrees in the box a couple of times but mostly in the mid to high 90's consistently for too long. Growth was completely off. I also thought, but don't know for sure, that I might have an airflow issue. Additionally, I got a new light that I didn't know how to use. The dimmer completely confused me PLUS I was growing from seed which I haven't done since the 70's and never indoor. It was an experimental grow. lol. I netted just over 4 oz's but that's paltry compared to what I'm used to in this environment. Good smoke, crappy quantity. Luckily, I have more green than I can use at the moment so it didn't hurt me. I haven't even tried the Lemon something sativa I grew lol.
For the airflow, I bought one of those USB gaming computer fans and installed it over one of my intake holes. It's got a speed controller on it and is silent. I think it works great.
Sound - so yeah I'm trying to be somewhat stealthy as I have a 13-year-old who I just don't want knowing what's up. He's not the looking around at my stuff kind of guy so he hasn't noticed the box or even asked about it. (a miracle, I know) It was important that there be no smell or sound coming from the box.
The exhaust fan is inside a soundproof box that I built out of plywood, caulked the crap out of and filled with soundproofing material. As the air I'm evacuating is not much, the fan speed is really low. Probably about as low as it can be. I've got it set up on a, hence the overkill, Titan speed and temperature fan controller. Ha!
I don't use the temp part just the idle fan setting. It works great! Here's what the exhaust fan and filter look like. It's behind some boxes on a storage shelf next to the microbox.
Let's just say the mini beer fridge next to my box makes more noise than my box does (probably smells more too!). For the smell, I've got a carbon filter on both the intake AND exhaust. There isn't a hint of a smell coming out of this thing.
So that's my rundown. Thank you for the warm reception ya'll. I've always liked it here and I'm glad to be back.
