Dear Friend,
The Marijuana Policy Project is almost done revising its model state
medical marijuana bill. This bill is based on the medical marijuana
law that was signed into law in Hawaii on June 14, 2000, and is in a
"generic" format that can easily be adapted to the specific drafting
requirements of any state legislature.
Because the bill was found to be acceptable to a majority of state
legislators in Hawaii, MPP is hopeful that this bill will be able to
move through the legislative process in dozens of other states, too.
All 50 state legislatures are convening between January and March of
2001, so the next couple of months will be a busy time for MPP.
In 1999 and 2000, medical marijuana legislation was debated in 15
state legislatures. MPP fully expects that medical marijuana
legislation will be debated in 30 state legislatures in 2001, with a
handful of legislatures also debating bills to remove criminal
penalties for ALL uses of marijuana.
Currently, there are eight states that have laws protecting medical
marijuana users -- Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine,
Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. If you live in one of these states,
please keep MPP in mind if and when legislation is introduced that
would amend your state's existing law.
If you live in one of the other 42 states and you know a state
legislator who might be interested in introducing legislation to
protect medical marijuana users from arrest and imprisonment, please
write back to let us know.
Thank you ...
Sincerely,
Robert D. Kampia
