It is really important to me that at least one person per household knows how to produce Cannabis medicine, and can then teach others to grow and produce high-quality medicine in the privacy of their home and heal themselves from almost any medical condition. Everyone should be consuming a daily dose of Cannabis medicine to supplement our EC systems to prevent illness. All plants have amazing healing abilities, but none of them are likely to be a cure-all. However in the Cannabis and coconut plant, we have the closest to a cure-all remedy. We must understand that our bodies need Cannabinoids in the same way as we need water and oxygen to survive.
This is the simplest and purest medicine recipe you will ever find, and it seems crazy that it took so long to work it all out. People always ask me “What is in it?” and they are surprised when I tell them that there is not even a single drop of water in this recipe. What took the longest in field studies was determining cooking temperatures, cooking time and dosage considerations, and working with different strains to develop different types of Cannabis medicine.
INGREDIENTS and EQUIPMENT
· Pure virgin organic coconut oil or the least refined coconut oil you can find, but it should ideally be organic coconut oil.
· Dried and properly cured Cannabis flowers with no exposure to mold or pesticides or artificial fertilizers or neem oil.
· Crock Pot style slow cooker with ceramic inner bowl.
· Stainless steel ladle.
· 2 x stainless steel 25 ml spoons
· Stainless steel whisk or fork
· 500 ml bowl for straining
· Muslin cloth or fine nylon leggings for straining
· Elastic bands
· Clean tea towels
· 1 absorbent wet cloth
· Toweling paper
· 1 container to hold utensils.
· Funnel.
· Container to hold your medicine.
· 1 separate container or recycled bottle to contain plant material after straining.
· Cooking thermometer.
METHOD
1. PLANT PREPARATION
1.1 High THC medicine
In my experience it is best to work with properly dried and cured female Cannabis flowers. Sometimes this is simply not possible, and it becomes necessary to use raw plant material. Many diseases have been cured in this way, but for maximum and effective healing, the flowers should be properly dried as a requirement. Even dried plant material that has been frozen should be lightly dried again at around 45 degrees Celsius before making medicine.
It has happened many times where water becomes trapped within the plant material. Cannabis and coconut are hydro phobic, meaning that they do not mix with water in the cooking process. This can lead to an unpleasant water-based residue, which can also result in unpleasant-smelling medicine.
The first step is to separate the flowers from the stalks between your fingers but keep the stalks to include in the pot. One does not normally cook fruit, so the seeds, which are the fruit of the Cannabis plant, may be separated. However it doesn’t matter if a few or more end up in the pot because the seeds are also loaded with Cannabinoids. It is not necessary to crush the herb up into a fine powder, and I like to simply open the buds up so that any seed does fall out. If you do not have time to do all of this or you do not feel well enough, it is perfectly fine to simply put the flowers as you receive them into the oil. The OV coconut oil will always permeate every fibre of the plant material for full Cannabinoid extraction.
1.2 High CBD medicine
It all depends on the genetics of the Cannabis plant you are using, but if you wish to make a high CBD medicine then you will have to source a low THC strain that will naturally be higher in CBD. This is how it works in nature. Using the leaves and stalks from a high THC plant will also offer more CBD than THC.
Keep the prepared Cannabis flowers aside until the oil is melted.
2. OIL PREPARATION
To produce a full litre of OV coconut oil you will be looking at a starting weight of plant material being 100 grams, working on the 10 grams per 100 ml oil ratio. If you want a super-high THC oil I would recommend a ratio of 1 cup of Cannabis flowers to 1 cup of oil. Depending on the individual and the condition being treated sometimes using half this amount is also still effective in healing many conditions, even cancers. Factors such as plant absorption must also be considered and often in order to produce a full litre of medicine one needs to work with approximately 1.2 litres of OV coconut oil, sometimes more depending on the plant material. The leaves tend to absorb more than the flowers, because generally more plant material is being used when working with the leaves. [50] (McDonough 2016)
OV coconut oil naturally solidifies at room temperature, 23 degrees Celsius, and starts to melt at 24 degrees Celsius. It is not necessary to keep coconut oil in the fridge. It is perfectly safe at room temperature. You can melt solid coconut oil in the sun, or you can simply boil some water and submerge your container into the hot water. Always remember to remove the lid of the glass jar, which could crack, and some plastic containers tend to change shape if the water is too hot. Once the oil is melted it can be poured into the crock pot or other suitable cooking vessel.
Turn the heat on to the lowest setting, which should be just below 100 degrees Celsius. However, I have found that 90 degrees Celsius is the perfect cooking temperature for this recipe. You can now add all the Cannabis flowers and stalks into the oil and use your whisk to stir the plant material into the oil. The oil must never ever boil or bubble, so you must keep a constant eye on the pot stirring at regular intervals. If the oil starts to bubble, reduce the heat immediately even if this means switching off for a while. This is no problem, but the oil must never boil or bubble because this can result in damaging the chemical components of the plant material.
Depending on where you are cooking your medicine, you might consider using a fan to control the smell, which can sometimes be very potent. In my experience some people have said that they cannot smell a thing and others suggest extraction fans because sometimes the medicine does smell very strong. But here in South Africa you can be sure that you are not breaking the law by making your own Cannabis medicine. This legal right is protected by the Constitutional Court hearing of 18 September 2018. There are ‘provisions’ about the smell of Cannabis wafting over to your neighbours and other red tape like not being allowed to consume Cannabis in front of children or un-consenting adults and animals. The proposed “Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill” has been received by parliament September 2020, and will most likely be rejected in the Constitutional Court following public opinion.
3. COOKING TIME
The most important thing to know is that there is absolutely no harm in switching your pot off and continuing after a few hours if time or circumstances do not permit, even if you are cooking on a fire; but the entire cooking process should continue for at least a full eighteen hours at 90 degrees Celsius.
A lot of people prefer not to leave the pot going when they are sleeping and this is also fine. My shaman teachers used to always say ‘the longer the stronger’; and even though I believe that eighteen hours is the perfect cooking time, I have met many people who have healed themselves by cooking for only six hours. It is a good idea to keep track of your cooking times if you are not able to cook straight through. Using your whisk, stir the pot at frequent intervals, at least every hour if possible, always keeping an eye on the temperature. It is also a good idea to invest in a cooking thermometer for accuracy.
What if you don’t have a crock pot?
A good idea is to scout charity and second-hand shops for the old-style crock pot or slow cooker with a ceramic inner. This is far safer than these modern Teflon coated inner pots, which really is aluminum non-stick coating. This medicine can even be made on a fire, and again the temperature is the most important factor to consider. If you do not have a pressure cooker there are other options like using two pots inside one another (one larger than the second). Or you could also use seal cap glass jars inside a pot of water. With this method you must raise the bottles so that you do not create heat spots under the jar. Honestly, it is possible for anyone to make their own Cannabis medicine in the privacy of their homes, and there are even blind people who manage to produce their own medicine. Over the years I have taught thousands of people to make this medicine over the telephone without even meeting them, and they all continue to heal their families. Crock pots use so little electricity that I do not even factor it into my costing.
Straining your medicine
After 18 hours of slow cooking turn the heat off completely and pull out the plug at the socket. Let the pot stand to cool while you start preparing to process your medicine. Personally, I prefer laying all my equipment and items to be used in a sterile silver stainless steel tray. It reminds me of my hospital days. Gather the muslin cloth or nylon, elastic bands and your bowl to strain into. You will also need the ladle, two spoons and a container to dispose of the plant material. I usually like to recycle two- litre soda bottles, which I cut off in the middle. Most ladles fit perfectly into this container allowing you to safely squeeze out any oil which might still be present in plant material, and you will be amazed at how much extra oil you can harvest in this way.
Cut a piece of muslin cloth to fit the brim of your bowl, and cover the bowl securing the cloth with an elastic band around the bowl base or middle. Use your ladle to suppress the air in the bowl by gently pushing down on the tautness of the cloth. Some people use coffee machine filters and other people use nylon tights to strain their medicine. You can also secure the muslin cloth over a large funnel inside a bigger bowl or bucket. All of these work, and you will find your ideal method by experimenting.
The container to dispense your medicine into can be a glass jar or any container really, and I usually simply pour it back into the container that the oil originally came out of. Glass jars have always been my first choice, but the truth is that when working with oil and glass, accidents do happen. Often people do not feel very well and the glass slips and cracks losing valuable medicine, and so I have gone back to using plastic containers. Accidents can also happen with plastic, and it can even happen that your actual medicine container can slip out of your hands and end up in the hot water you are melting your medicine in. This may seem like a catastrophe but it is easier to salvage your medicine in this way than to wipe it off the floor which I do not recommend because there might be shards of glass collected as well. In order to separate the oil from the water all you need to do is pour the whole mixture into a glass jar and turn the jar upside down, and place in the fridge. After the oil has solidified you can simply open the jar and release the water, and you will be left with your medicine.
Always keep the lid on this container as you are waiting for the oil to strain into the bowl before decanting to avoid any contamination like dust. As the oil cools down it will strain more slowly because it is beginning to solidify as it cools down to room temperature. At this point you can turn the heat on to the lowest setting again for ease of straining, because it is much easier for the oil to strain at a certain heat point. Again, if you have to leave your pot you can simply switch back on at a later stage to reheat to carry on again. There will be no damage to the valuable Cannabinoids; only enhancement when left longer.
Once you have all your equipment at hand you can start ladling the oil and plant material out onto the secured muslin cloth so that it may strain into the bowl. You can use the back of a stainless steel spoon to urge the oil to strain through to the bowl. You can work out how many ladles you can scoop before you have to decant into the medicine container. You can also use a funnel to decant the medicine from the bowl into the medicine jar. Use a tea towel to protect your hands as the bowl receiving the strained oil will also be very hot. Remove the plant material as you go along and place into a separate container. Continue to strain all of the oil in this way and then do a final squeeze out from the plant material container.
In my book Cannabis is The Human Companion Plant I discuss Cannabis medicine dosing at greater length and in particular the principle of ‘miniscule dosing’. This focuses on starting with the lowest possible dose, and building up to a tolerance level, and then working back down again, to establish the maintenance dose. We already know that just small amounts of Cannabis can stimulate the body to manufacture more receptors and more Endocannabinoids. [51] (Grant and Cohn 2008) Some of the most important dosage considerations include establishing whether the THC receptors are activated, medical history, vital signs, blood sugar, stress levels, organ function, diet, bowel habits, sleep patterns and vitamin D deficiency. Some patients will start on a 0.5 ml once a day for an aneurysm, while others may start on 30 ml per day for a blood condition. In some patients 5 ml might be way too strong, but another patient might say it has no effect. I have even had patients tell me that they get high on CBD high strains and even raw plant material, so truly we are all wired differently. [52] (Abuhasira et al 2019) [53] (Gordon D Ko et al, 2016)
