Task force agents arrested Rio Grande City Mayor Ruben Villarreal's son Thursday as part of an undercover drug sting operation, officials said Saturday.
Ruben Oscar Villarreal Jr., 30 of Rio Grande City, was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the 200 block of North West Street, where he was allegedly selling marijuana, said Pedro Estrada, lead investigator with the Starr County High Enforcement Drug Trafficking Area task force.
Task force agents bought about 26 grams of "hydro" - a more potent and expensive marijuana grown hydroponically - that Villarreal had been buying in Laredo, officials said.
Authorities found him with 1.6 ounces of marijuana, which he had split in two large Mason jars, Estrada said.
Investigators said they also confiscated drug paraphernalia, clear plastic baggies, and scales from the home.
Villarreal's 25-year-old-brother Michael Villarreal and a third man, 32-year-old Anthony Hernandez, were also detained during the raid and later released without charges, but agents continue to look into whether they were involved, Estrada said.
The Rio Grande City mayor said he does not have a close relationship with his son, adding that he had no knowledge about his arrest.
"We always want our children to make good decisions, but in the cases that they don't, all we can do as parents is to love them and hope that in the future they'll make better decisions," Villarreal said Saturday.
Villarreal faced charges of Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana, four misdemeanor counts of delivery of marijuana and one count of felony delivery of marijuana, because the amount was more than ¼ ounce.
Starr County Justice of the Peace Jesse Barrera set Villarreal's bond at $31,500.
If convicted of the state jail felony delivery of marijuana charge, Villarreal would face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
