Nixon shook hands with Elvis, didn’t he? So it’s completely believable that state Rep. Jeremy Faison - a hard-right hillbilly - and hippie moonbeam Bernie Ellis have reached across the great divide to agree about something.
Faison has won the admiration of Ellis, a former public health official and longtime proponent of medical marijuana, by announcing he’s for making weed legal for veterans with PTSD.
"I've spoken with many veterans who have fought for our country who have looked and know the side effects of prescription drugs. They know the side effects of alcohol, and they desperately want to be able to use the cannabis plant," said Faison, who succeeded this year in legalizing the use of cannabis oil to treat epilepsy.
Faison is from Cocke County, once the moonshine capital of the world. Up in those hollows these days, patches of weed aren’t uncommon. So he’s not really such an unlikely lawmaker to understand the need for medical marijuana.
The Ellis-authored Democratic bill allows more widespread use of medical cannabis, and it fails in committee every year. Now there’s also a more limited GOP bill. It won’t pass either, with the Haslam administration claiming any amount of marijuana smoking - even by sick and dying people - could lead to the zombie apocalypse. Maybe Faison's idea will fare better.
On Facebook, Ellis thanked Faison for his “informed, principled and compassionate stand. And for not mincing words about it. What a Christmas present for our Tennessee vets.” Ellis added:
Everything you said can and should be applied to other Tennesseans suffering from serious medical conditions for which cannabis provides a safe, effective and reliable option. (Maybe someday a cheaper option too). There are many Tennesseans with cancer, MS, HIV, glaucoma, intractable pain, etcetera who would qualify under these conditions and safe access to medical cannabis should be there for them too.
