Tennessee: Hemp Farmers Waiting For Delivery Of Highly Regulated Seeds

Some farmers in Tennessee fear their highly regulated hemp seeds will not arrive in time for them to grow a usable crop of industrial hemp this year.

The Johnson City Press reports farmers' requested seeds have not arrived yet.

A spokeswoman for the Agriculture Department says the permits have been granted, but the agency is waiting for the seeds' originating countries, Canada and Australia, to approve their export and ship them.

The federal 2014 Farm Bill allowed industrial hemp to be grown for research purposes only. Tennessee hopes the plant will become a cash crop for areas hurt by the falling demand for other agricultural products, such as tobacco.

Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant and is low in the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC.
