Temp Problem and possible solution?

Our attic grow with cold nights rolling through every other week is causing major temp fluctuations. We have been using a ceramic heater on a timer at night, but with colder temps we need an additional heater. We are still vegging with 150MH. I was wondering if we could just our 600HPS at night instead of the extra heater. Obviously we would keep a close eye on the temps if we go this way, but I'm more concerned that the HPS would cause too much stress or other unforeseen problems. Is this a good idea? Has anyone else tried this with good results or bad results?

Here's a link to our grow Dhrone's first grow - 600w hps.

Thanks in advance! :grinjoint:

right now they are under a 150w mh and 6 or so 6500k cfls. would switching over to the 600w hps cause too much stress? should i do it in increments or can i just make the switch?

You can use your 600 but the plants will stretch a lot more cause of light spectrum. I guess you are already running your mh at night so you could get heat lamps an run them with it. Would it be possible to intake air directly from downstairs to your room?

Thanks for the feedback stretch. Yes we are 24/7 on the MH now. We could pull air from downstairs but it wont do much good b/c this attic space is directly above the garage. It's probably a bit warmer but not much. We could stick with our current plan, using the heater on a timer at nights?

no.. it would be way too costly to insulate the whole attic space and we need it to breath in the summer time. i think thats going to be a bigger issue than what we are dealing with now.

since we are going to be lsting could we not just keep everything that stretches tied down?

is this a one time gro or will there be subsequent grows in this space?

the reason I ask is that you may be battling too much heat in the summer. if that would be the case, the insulation will help you there as well.....

Yea we will have heat issues. Probably going to pull the cooler air from the garage below. Insulating the grow box is a more realistic approach, if it's worth it?

Actually the past two days it's been on (low) 24hrs just to maintain the 70's-80's. It's averaging about 25-30 degrees warmer than outside temps.

I really don't see any reason why you shouldn't go with the 600w hps. Will give you some more heat and thats all I've ever veg'd with.

actually "mcrog" or whatever you like to call yourself... its been on a 30 min on/off timer. and it got down to 25 last night and the low in the box was 65 so thats 40. we have a temperature regulated heater coming but if we dont have to use so much energy and run the heater i dont want to...

sounds like there is no reason not to crank the 600w up now. when the plants start stretching we will pin them down and spit in their faces.

as for the summer...
we are going to insulate the roof baffles to keep the heat that comes from the sun beating on the shingles to a minimum and we have two open air louver vents on either side of the space and we are going to constantly blow air from one side to the other with a fan... we are going to intake from the garage below which will probably be about 10 degrees or more cooler than the attic.

the 600 watt lamp has an air cooled hood so we will be taking the heat from the light and dumping it outside.

after doing all of that we are still going to have some trouble on hot days.

but we will deal with that when the time comes.
