SAN BENITO – Valerie Valle found a roach in her blueberry and strawberry frozen yogurt parfait.
Not the crawly kind of roach.
The Round Rock teen and seven other family members were returning home from a weeklong vacation on South Padre Island Thursday morning. They stopped for breakfast at the McDonald's at Sam Houston Boulevard and U.S. Expressway 77/83.
That's when Valle, 16, said she found the partially smoked quarter-inch long marijuana cigarette remnant inside the frozen yogurt treat.
"I thought it was funny because so many people go there and I found that," Valle said in a telephone interview. "It was sick, but funny."
Valle said she waited in line to return the parfait.
When a McDonald's employee asked her if she wanted another one, she said "no thanks" and asked to have her father's money refunded.
The 16-year-old said restaurant management refunded the money, but did not offer the family any further compensation.
Valle said a number of other restaurant patrons observed her complaint while standing in line, but remained to finish their meals.
The teen said her family does not regularly eat at the worldwide fast-food chain restaurant, and did not plan to visit another anytime soon.
According to a San Benito police report, only two McDonald's employees made parfaits that morning.
Police took the used marijuana cigarette as evidence and restaurant management told police the employees take drug tests.
No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
"We're conducting our own internal investigation into this incident," said Joe Magliolo, operations manager for the company that owns the McDonald's franchise.
"Obviously, it would be inappropriate to come to any conclusions as to what did or did not happen until all the facts are known."
Valle said the employees should be fired if their drug tests come back positive.
"It's horrible that they did that," she said. "That stuff's illegal."
Chief Building Inspector Joe Avila said the McDonald's passed a city health inspection Friday morning.
Avila said the restaurant's management requested a city health inspection for the building following the incident.
The inspection was performed because the restaurant was already on a waiting list for an annual inspection, he said.
