TC Limits Medical Marijuana Downtown

No more medical marijuana collectives will be allowed in Traverse City's downtown, despite continued interest by would-be shop owners. Last night, city commissioners decided to limit collectives in the city. Only one shop will be allowed every thousand feet.

Had that been the rule when the city originally passed its medical marijuana ordinance, only three collectives would have been allowed downtown. Today there are seven.

Six more collectives could still open in other parts of the city, and city staff expect more collectives will open in town, based on interest that's been expressed.

Another change, anyone wanting to open a new collective will have to give the city 10 days notice. Background checks will be done to make sure the owner or operator has not been convicted of a drug-related felony.
